Mont Saint Michel
Mont-Saint-Michel, a jewel between sky and sea, shaped by centuries
Located in the bay of the same name, Mont-Saint-Michel is a tidal island and a town on the Norman coast, in the Manche department. This exceptional site, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, attracts more than three million visitors each year, making it one of the most visited tourist sites in France after Paris.
The history of Mont-Saint-Michel dates back to the 8th century, when Bishop Aubert erected a sanctuary dedicated to the archangel Michael. Over the centuries, this place of worship has become an important pilgrimage centre, attracting worshippers from all over the world. During the Hundred Years' War, Mont-Saint-Michel was a strategic target and valiantly resisted English assaults. Later, it was transformed into a prison, nicknamed the "Bastille of the Seas," until the mid-19th century.
The abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel, perched at the top of the island, is a masterpiece of medieval architecture. Its majestic halls, peaceful cloisters, and breathtaking views of the bay make it a must-see site. Each stone tells a story, and each visit is an immersion into centuries of history and spirituality.

Mont-Saint-Michel is also famous for its spectacular tides, among the highest in Europe, which can reach up to 14 meters difference between high tide and low tide. These tides have shaped the unique landscape of the bay, creating polders and salt marshes where sheep graze and whose meat is renowned for its unique flavour.
To preserve this exceptional site, a 200-million-euro project was launched in 2006 to restore the maritime character of Mont-Saint-Michel. This project led to the construction of a hydraulic dam and a new bridge, designed by architect Dietmar Feichtinger, to allow the Mont to become an island again at high tide.
In short, Mont-Saint-Michel is much more than just a tourist site. It is a place full of history, spirituality, and natural beauty, which continues to fascinate and inspire millions of visitors each year.
